Allen Harim to bulk up Harbeson production with closure of Maryland plant

Chicken processor Allen Harim is closing a plant on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in July, while building up its presence in Harbeson, Delaware.

That means an extra 200 people employed at the Harbeson plant, according to CEO Steve Evans.

He says half of Cordova’s 300 workers will be offered jobs in Delaware, including locations in Seaford and Dagsboro.

Evans notes the move to Harbeson just makes sense.

“They got more square feet, it processes two shifts with one sanitation shift. Cordova was a smaller plant with one shift and one shift of sanitation. And then the capital investment we’re making in Harbeson had a better long-term longevity than the investment would be in Cordova,” he said.

Employees learned of the news today and Allen Harim will open an on-site career center in Cordova for those affected.

Ultimately, Evans says the new equipment and extra workers in Harbeson will be able to process 1.9 million birds each year.
