Tulip festival blooms in Lewes

The 8th annual Lewes Tulip Celebration starts this week, honoring the city's Dutch heritage.

And like a sprouting tulip, the festival has grown and grown.

"It started with 5,000 tulips being planted and we’re now up to 20,000 tulips being planted," Lewes Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betsy Reamer said.

She said as soon as you drive into town you’ll be greeted by thousands of colorful flowers.

Since Lewes was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, officials wanted to honor their heritage by emulating Scandinavian tulip festivals.

The celebration runs through April 15.
