Delawareans with a New Years resolution to get in shape may want to take part in a hike on New Years Day.
On Thursday, Delaware State Parks is sponsoring free guided hikes as part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative.
Riley Hayes, an Interpretive Specialist for Delaware State Parks, says the First Day Hikes are a great opportunity to unplug from the electronic gadgets people likely received for Christmas.
“That’s kind of a really big goal, we want to promote healthy lifestyles and year round recreation and so we want to push that forward; foster physical mental well-being and a stewardship of natural, cultural and recreational resources.”
It's all part of a national initiative designed to get people outdoors with hikes happening in 50 states.
"In Delaware specifically, its nine different parks and there will be at least 11 hikes," says Hayes. "Some of them are short distances, some of them are a little bit longer and some parks will be offering hike at your own pace options.
On January 1 of this year, more than 600 participants hiked over 1500 miles in Delaware’s State Parks on New Years Day.
