Gunn challenging Kent Co. Recorder of Deeds recount

The closest race in this year’s election cycle is headed back to the courts.

State Republican Party officials and La Mar Gunn are challenging the recount process that saw him lose Kent County Recorder of Deeds to incumbent Betty Lou McKenna by two votes.

Early results pegged Gunn as the winner by that same two-vote margin.

Filed in Kent County Superior Court, the complaint says none of the three recounts of absentee ballots gave the same results. The first two recounts increased Gunn’s lead each time.

State Election Commissioner Elaine Manlove told Delaware Public Media the third and final result showed mismarked ballots that didn’t properly register.

The suit claims that the Board of Canvass, whoich certifies election results, initially agreed to rescan the ballots and hand count those showing no results. They later certified the third recount.
