As part of a nationwide recall, fruit potentially contaminated with listeria has been removed from four Delaware food retailers.
The Delaware Division Public Health said Thursday that peaches, plums, pluots and nectarines were removed from all locations of Costco, BJs, Sam’s Club and Trader Joe’s.
DPH is urging consumers who purchased potentially contaminated fruits to throw them out or return them to the stores.
Delawareans are also advised to dispose of any fruits stored in contact with the recalled products.
Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children or elderly people. Those with weakened immune systems are also at risk. Infections are characterized by high fevers, severe headaches and abdominal pain.
No illnesses related to listeria have been reported yet in Delaware.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the voluntary recall began after the company that packs the fruit in question - Cutler, California-based Wawona Packing Co. - conducted an internal review.
