Cape Henlopen School Board scraps summer reading list in response to book controversy

The Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education is scraping the district's entire summer reading list in response to controversy over its decision to remove a book from that list earlier this summer.

In June, the Board voted to remove “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” from the 10-book list for incoming freshman, citing explicit language.

In a 6-1 vote Thursday night, board members put it back on the list, but also removed the entire list of from its summer reading program.

The removal of the novel sparked controversy because other books on the list featured similar curse words. Critics of the move suggested the book was removed because it featured a lesbian protagonist.

The ACLU of Delaware this week threatened a lawsuit if the book was not put back on the list – saying it had First Amendment concerns as well as issues with the procedure the board used in removing the book.
