Christina Cultural Arts Center opens concert season with Grammy nominated duo

Christina Cultural Arts Center

The Christina Cultural Arts Center in Wilmington begins its live music series this weekend.

The center’s executive director Raye Avery Jones says the series debuts with Opening Night Live @ Christina, featuring a  two-time Grammy nominated jazz/R&B duo.

“On Sunday, October 7 we will be presenting The Baylor Project, which is Marcus and Jean Baylor, a husband/wife duo that was incredibly nominated for Grammy’s in two categories in 2017. So they’ll be at Christina on Sunday, October 7 at 3 p.m,” Avery Jones said.

Avery Jones says as children of pastors, Marcus and Jean Baylor’s musical roots were planted deep within the church, contributing to their sound which blends gospel, blues, soul and jazz.

Their debut CD "The Journey", released on their own label, Be A Light, topped the Billboard Jazz Chart at Number 8 and a year later garnered 2 Grammy® nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Avery Jones says arts programming like this music series is part of the Christina Cultural Arts Center’s growing mission.

“Christina was found 72 years ago by Swedish and Polish immigrants as a settlement house so they could retain their cultural practices and get acclimated to a new world. And the mission of Christina expanded in 1969 to focus in on the Arts,” said Avery Jones.

Tickets to this Sunday’s performance are $35 and are available at the Christina Cultural Arts Center website.
