More patients in the First State will soon have access to telemedicine services

The Medical Society of Delaware is teaming with telemedicine provider MEND to bring the medical communication technology to more patients in the First State.

Since the 2015 legislation expanding the use of telemedicine in the Delaware, the technology has become widely used--allowing patients to see medical professionals without visiting a “brick and mortar” facility.

Some physicians in the Delaware Medical Society were already using MEND as their telemedicine provider, but under this new partnership all MSD members will be offered MEND.

MEND spokeswoman Lauren Howard touts the software as being the easiest to use on the market, and says the technology is secure and entirely HIPAA compliant.

“The patient is going to be sent a text message and an email that's going to contain the information that will allow them to access their visit. All they have to do is click a link. That link takes them directly to their secure appointment. Nobody else can access that appointment outside of that link,” said Howard.

Howard says the Doctor’s visit proceeds afterwards much like a skype, or Facetime chat.

MEND also allows Delaware patients to continue seeing their existing physician, rather than having patients pick from a list of doctors they’ve never met in person.

“Here is the technology to do that. It doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s really easy to use. But you can treat your own patients; you don't have to refer them to another network of doctors to get patients the telemedicine services that patients are absolutely asking for now,” said Howard.

An earlier version of this story said all MSD members will be using MEND instead of offered it. We regret the error.
