Punkin Chunkin TV special canceled

A Science Channel special on Punkin Chunkin has been canceled after a woman was critically injured during the event’s return earlier this month.

Science Channel spokesman Paul Schur said the network will not air the three-hour Punkin Chunkin show it had planned for this Saturday in light of the Nov. 6th incident.

“We are sending our hopes and prayers for a full recovery to the injured woman, her family and loved ones,” Schur said

The woman, identified as a 39-year-old producer working at the event, has not been named. She was one two people injured when pieces from an air cannon named Pumpkin Reaper came off when it was fired.

According to Delaware State Police, the pieces, including the trap door where pumpkins are loaded, were blown away from the cannon and into the air before coming down and striking the woman in the head and face.

A 56-year-old male was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Punkin Chunkin returned this year after a two-year hiatus.

It is unclear whether or not the event will return in 2017.
