New Castle County is sending money to the Wilmington Senior Center - money county officials say will help the center make much needed repairs.

The $10,000 grant comes from the New Castle County Cares fund - a contingency fund to help with critical programming and operation needs.

Wilmington Senior Center executive director Kathleen Purcell the grant is well-timed.

"We had an inspection from the fire company and we need new ceiling tiles. I had a gentleman in here today to give me a price on new ceiling tiles, and the ceiling tiles are expensive. We're going to use that [grant] to do some improvements on the building." said Purcell. "We'll also use it for activities and programs. we recently started a scholarship fund."

New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer says his administration is doing its best to look out for seniors.

"To make sure seniors are enjoying their golden years. So that we know that right here in Wilmington, there's a wonderful future for all residents," said Meyer. "We're very happy to partner with the Wilmington Senior Center."

Meyer is hopeful legislators from Dover follow his lead and support the center.

"This is also hopefully a message to the folks down in Dover, as you go to the Bond Committee, I think this week, to say that this matters," said Meyer. "This is important to us in the city of Wilmington and New Castle County - to give additional resources to support the seniors who are right here to the Wilmington Senior Center."

Purcell is scheduled to meet with legislators in Dover this week.
