Sussex County proposes pulling from savings for nearly $186 million 2020 budget

Sussex County is considering cracking open its piggy bank next year.

County officials are proposing a nearly $186 million budget for fiscal year 2020.

The plan would not raise taxes but would tap into cash reserves to further fund law enforcement, libraries and an improved wastewater service among other projects.

It allocates $1 million for a new public safety complex, in addition to funding an increased state trooper presence and upping the budget for local law enforcement by $100,000.

$2 million is slated for broadband infrastructure in rural parts of the county.

And $35 million in capital funding would go towards sewer improvements, though the plan does not raise taxes for sewer service.

The proposed budget does, however, propose changes in fees for some services with the Public Works division and the Register of Wills office.

It also seeks funding for eight new jobs spread out across several county agencies.

County Council will hold a public hearing to discuss its proposed budget on Tuesday, June 18th. By law it must adopt a budget the following Thursday.
