The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge delivered record-breaking numbers for Special Olympics Delaware Sunday.
A record 3,733 people rushed into the Atlantic Ocean from Rehoboth Beach Sunday afternoon for 29th annual edition of the event, raising a best-ever $1,018,000.Those numbers topped last year’s plunge when just over 3,500 participants raised more than $906,000.
And It's the first time the plunge has topped $1 million in a single year.
The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge has now raised about $13 million dollars raised for Special Olympics Delaware since it began in 1992.
The money raised helps pay to make sports training and competitions available to about 4,200 Delawareans who have intellectual disabilities.
And for the record – both the air temperature and water temperature were 42 degrees at the time swimmers took the plunge at 1 p.m. Sunday. That water temp was three degrees warmed than a year ago.
