Freeman Arts Pavilion to celebrate National Poetry Month with poetry series

The Freeman Arts Pavilion and a past Delaware Beat Poet Laureate are teaming up to celebrate National Poetry Month in April.

April is National Poetry Month and a Sussex County arts nonprofit plans to celebrate with a poetry series.

The Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville is partnering with BLW “Babs” McGrory, a past Beat Poet Laureate of Delaware, to host five poetry workshops and events each Saturday in April.

Freeman Arts Pavilion executive director Patti Grimes explains how they came up with this idea.

“So as we’re coming out of the pandemic - we’ve all been cooped up for over a year. And we have a beautiful, simple outdoor space and thought what could we do as Spring’s coming up and the weather is improving?” said Grimes.

Freeman Arts also hosts an outdoor Haiku Garden from April 1 to May 2.

“All during the month of April, we’re going to have a Haiku Garden - where we’ll have these large stones with a variety of Haiku around a tree so you can sort of do a self discovery and exploration of that," said Grimes. "And then on April 10th, we’ll have Haiku Rocks, where  - you’ve seen where people are painting on rocks now -  you’ll be able to have a crash course on the fundamentals of Haiku.”

All of the events are free and Grimes notes the events are geared toward writers of all skill levels and experience.
