Food Bank of Delaware announces expanded catering services statewide

The Food Bank of Delaware is expanding its catering services statewide - and to the public.

The Food Bank of Delaware has a new way to both feed and educate Delawareans.

The Food Bank is expanding its catering service statewide and opening it up to the public.

Food Bank spokeswoman Kim Turner says the catering is one piece of the organization’s Delaware Food Works workforce development initiative, “Where we have programming in warehousing, food service and soon-to-be agriculture. So the mission of the program is to eliminate food insecurity through workforce development, social enterprise and small business incubation - which takes place at our Newark headquarters.”

Turner says the culinary students in the initiative have done some catering jobs through the Discover Cafe at the  Food Bank’s Newark headquarters, but students want to serve downstate as well, “It’s an opportunity for us to provide hands-on training to our culinary students - both in Newark and Milford - and also raise revenue for student scholarships for the program.”

She says catered options from the Discover Cafe, include breakfast and lunch sandwich trays, pastries, bagels, muffins, salads, boxed lunches, desserts and more. Menus can be customized.

“Anybody can order catering through the Food Bank; it’s open to the public. We’ve priced ourselves competitive so that we can make money off the jobs that we are able to gather. But like I said, it is open to anybody in the community who’s in need of catering services,” said Turner.

Turner says orders will be taken and filled through the Newark location by culinary students.  If someone from Kent or Sussex County places an order, food will be shipped to the Food Bank’s Milford location for pick up or delivery.

Turner says all the proceeds from the catering jobs will benefit student scholarships.

Catering inquiries can be made to the Food Bank of Delaware’s Discover Cafe at (302) 444-8124.
