The flu is still lingering in Delaware

Delaware Public Media

The influenza virus is still hanging around in the First State.

It’s now late in the flu season, and Delaware’s Division of Public Health says the rate of cases is high for this time of year.

The overall number of cases has begun to decline, but DPH reports an increase in the typically more severe influenza A last month.

The most recent data counts more than 5800 lab-confirmed flu cases in Delaware during the 2019 season. 943 people were hospitalized and there’s been 20 flu-related deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports the flu peaked nationally in February, but includes Delaware in 34 states where the flu activity remains above normal.

CDC estimates 508,000 flu hospitalizations and 46,800 deaths across the country so far this season.

DPH and the CDC both recommend flu vaccines as long as the virus is still circulating.
