First State reports three new flu-related fatalities

Delaware Public Media

Three more people have died from the flu in Delaware.

All three were from Kent County, were over the age of 50 and had underlying health issues.

Two of the deaths occurred in late January and one in first week of February.

This brings the total number of flu-related deaths in the First State this season to 11.

That’s one higher than this time last year, which was a record breaking season in which 35 people died from the flu locally. But the total number of flu cases this season in Delaware is lower than at this time a year ago.

2,037 people have been confirmed to have caught the flu in Delaware since the start of the season and 356 people have been hospitalized as a result.

Delaware’s Division of Public Health is encouraging those who have yet to be vaccinated for the flu to do so.
