The Grand Opera House and the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) partnered this summer to offer a drive-in concert series on the Wilmington Riverfront.
The goal of “Concerts by Car” is to give people something to do, in light of many events and activities being canceled during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Grand’s executive director Mark Fields says the concerts’ initial success is prompting them to expand, “And as long as the weather holds out - the reality is that we’re not going to be able to perform indoors for quite a while yet. And since we are a performing arts organization, we had to get innovative and find another way to do it.”
The next installment in the series is Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, when Montana Wildaxe brings its blend of Grateful Dead and Allman Bros. covers, psychedelic rock and jam band to Frawley Stadium.
Meantime, if you can't make Saturday's "Concerts by Car," a spin-off of the event hosted by the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) is taking shape.
Live at the Riverfront! Drive-In Concert - featuring the Amish Outlaws is Saturday, August 22, 2020 in the Riverfront Commuter Parking Lot behind Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.
“And actually a local R&B and Rock group Best Kept Soul is going to be opening for them. So that starts at 7:30 on Aug. 22nd in our Commuter Lot on the Riverfront,” said Joe Valenti - the marketing manager for the RDC.
He notes these concerts have become a “new normal” for many people, offering something to do in place of many events and activities being canceled by the coronavirus pandemic.
