Gov. John Carney is moving some people around in his administration.
Department of Correction (DOC) Commissioner Claire DeMatteis is shifting to serve as Carney’s Special Assistant. In the new role, DeMatteis will be charged with managing federal stimulus dollars received by Delaware. She will also play a role in crisis management across state government.
This move will not require a state Senate confirmation.
DeMatteis has served as a special assistant to Carney before - overseeing reforms to the state’s correctional system. She has served as DOC commissioner since 2019.
Carney is tapping DOC Deputy Commissioner Monroe Hudson to replace DeMatteis as commissioner. The state Senate will consider this nomination later this month.
Also, the Alcohol and Beverage Control Commissioner John Cordrey is retiring after two decades on the job.
Carney wants his former deputy legal counsel Jaqueline Mette to fill the role. Mette’s appointment also requires Senate confirmation.
In a statement, Carney congratulated Cordrey on his retirement, expressed confidence in his new appointments and pointed to their combined decades of experience in state government.
