Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie reflects on his career, President Trump at UD

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie returned to his alma mater - the University of Delaware - Wednesday night to discuss his new book and the current political landscape.

Christie’s book is called “Let Me Finish: Trump, the Kushners, Bannon, New Jersey, and the Power of In-Your-Face Politics.”

He argues that “in your face politics” can be civil as well as direct. He said he accomplished many things with a Democratic-controlled state legislature by building relationships. That’s despite documented instances where he called people names or told them to “sit down and shut up.” He blames the media in part for not including the context of his remarks.

Christie endorsed Donald Trump for president after ending his own campaign in February 2016, but noted Trump was not his first choice. He said both Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton were very unpopular with some voters.

“But remember too and this is my problem, you know, with some people who are being very doctrinaire about this I think is elections, whether we like it or not, we don’t get to vote - most of the time - we don’t get to vote for who we want to vote for, we get to vote for who’s left,” he said.

Christie also criticized the impeachment of President Trump by House Democrats. He said the impeachment effort will fail in the Senate, if the House votes to impeach.

“You’re not going to get 20, which is what you need, 20 Republicans to vote to remove the president of the United States from office 9 or 10 months before a national election,” he said.

Looking at the current political landscape, Christie argues Tuesday’s Democratic wins in Kentucky and Virginia don’t predict the results of the 2020 presidential election.
