Navarro will run for state Insurance Commissioner

New Castle County Sheriff Trinidad Navarro is throwing his hat in the ring for a different office.

Navarro officially launched his campaign to become state Insurance Commissioner Thursday and will face off against incumbent Karen Weldin Stewart in a 2016 Democratic primary.

The former New Castle County police officer says he’s already familiar with how to interpret complex policies and codes because of his work in law enforcement.

If elected, he promises to fight for consumers.

"The insurance commissioner and the industry are too close. Meaning that the premise of the insurance commissioner at the beginning was to protect the consumer. And with the rates that have gone up over the years, we think we can do a better job on that," says Navarro.

Navarro adds that he would work to end what he calls discrimination against the elderly and families who were hit hard by the 2008 recession.
