Former state Rep. George Carey dies

Delaware Public Media

Former Milford-area state Rep. George Carey died unexpectedly Sunday. He was 88-years-old.

Carey was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1984, eventually serving 26 years before retiring.

He was a lifelong farmer who worked with regional and national agriculture organizations to help craft policy – including creating Delaware’s farmland preservation program in 1991.

Since June, nearly 120,000 acres of farmland have been enrolled under the program.

Carey is also the second former lawmaker from the Milford area to die this summer. Rep. Jack Peterman succumbed to an unknown illness last month after battling cancer.

Carey is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Rogers Funeral Home in Milford.  The funeral will be held at Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church in Argo Corners at 11 a.m. Thursday.
