UD men and women open college hoop season with wins

A new college basketball season tipped-off in the First State Friday night with the UD men and women victorious in their openers.

On the men’s side, the University of Delaware topped Delaware State University 62-56 in Dover, rallying from a 13-point deficit for the victory.  The Hens now lead the all-time series between the First State rivals 12-4.

The UD women started Tina Martin’s 20th season as head coach with an impressive win, trouncing Lafayette 67-47 in Newark.  Senior Courtni Green led the Blue Hens with 19 points.

DSU’s women open their first season under new head coach Barabra Burgess when they visit West Virginia Saturday night at 7.  Burgess inherits a team that went 5-25 last season.

And the UD field hockey team begins play in the NCAA Division I tournament Saturday morning.  The Blue Hens, ranked 12th nationally, visit 4th ranked Virginia at 11 am.  It’s UD’s third straight NCAA tourney appearance.
