Delaware’s unemployment rate is higher in April.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month was at 3.9% up from 3.7% in March. It was also 3.7% in April 2024.
The rate is still lower than the national number in April - 4.2%.
The area unemployment rates were all lower last month with the exception of Wilmington which was up to 5.4% from 5.2% in March. And they were mostly higher than in April 2024 while Dover remained steady.
Those rates are not seasonally adjusted.
There were 19,600 unemployed Delawareans last month, an increase from 18,900 in April 2024.
Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs numbers were higher by 1,200 last month than in March at 494,200.
Nonfarm jobs have seen a net gain of 4,400 since April 2024 - a 0.9% bump, but that number still is behind the national increase of 1.2% in the same period.
The state’s year-to-date seasonally adjusted monthly job growth has averaged 850 new jobs - slightly above the 600 jobs gained during the same period last year.
The Private Education and Health Services industry grew by 3,300 jobs over last year, led by 1,300 new jobs in hospitals and nursing and 600 new jobs in residential care facilities.
On the flipside, the Food Service and Drinking Places category, a subsector of the Leisure and Hospitality Industry, saw the greatest decline over the year - shedding 1,500 jobs.
Leisure and Hospitality made up for that in other areas, but still saw an overall decline of 600 over the last 12 months.
Federal jobs saw no change year-to-year rankings, but decreased 100 in month-to-month numbers.
