Dover Memorial Day events rewind to the Revolutionary War

Delaware State Parks

First State Heritage Park in Dover is celebrating Memorial Day by taking a look at Delaware’s History.

What is now the state capital was once a hotbed for activity during the fight for American independence.

First State Heritage Park Superintendent Sarah Zimmerman said walking tours on The Green will highlight many of Delaware’s Revolutionary War heroes.

"You get to hear about the struggles for independence and hear about the stories of Caesar Rodney, Dr. James Tilton, French Battell and so many more."

A theater production at The John Bell House called “Son of the Old Soil” will take visitors back to 1841, when Delaware’s General John Haslet was returned to the First State after he was interned in Philadelphia after the Revolutionary War.

But the Memorial Day events aren’t limited to The Green.

"We have the gallery of military heroes upstairs in Legislative Hall. And they’ll be able to learn about these men, who they were and remember their sacrifices. And these extend from the Revolution all the way to World War II," Zimmerman said.

The Memorial Day events are all day Monday, May 29 on The Green and at Legislative Hall in Dover.
