First State unemployment up slightly, but size of workforce grows

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up for the second straight month in June.

6.1 percent of the First State’s labor force is currently out work, according to state Department of Labor numbers released Friday.

That’s up two tenths of a percentage point from May and the highest unemployment rate Delaware has seen since January.

The size of the First State’s labor force grew by about 1,300 people in May, however.

All three Delaware counties saw a jump in their non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in June.

Kent County now stands at 6.9 percent, up from 6.2 percent in May. New Castle’s rate rose to 6.6 from 5.9 percent. Sussex County saw the slightest increase, up two tenths of a point to 5.5 percent in June.

The City of Wilmington also saw its unemployment rate increase seven tenths of a point to 9.3 percent.
