The Delaware Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that repairs on the damaged I-495 bridge over the Christina River are advancing ahead of schedule.
DelDOT says that if things continue to go smoothly, southbound lanes on the bridge could be reopened weeks before the original Labor Day target.
Project engineers say the drilling of shafts down to bedrock to create foundations for new support columns for the damaged section of the bridge has gone “exceedingly well.” They anticipate that work will be done by this Tuesday (July 15) and completion of the new support columns to follow soon after.
Jacking towers must also be constructed on the new foundations to realign the tilted portion of the bridge. DelDOT says that task has the potential for setbacks.
