First State roads stay busy over Fourth of July weekend

Major roads in the First State did not get a break for the Fourth of July weekend.

882,655 vehicles passed through Delaware’s three toll plazas between Thursday, July 3 and Sunday, July 6.

Almost half of the travelers, 397,829 vehicles, passed through the toll plaza on I-95 in Newark, while the rest were split between the Biddle’s Corner and Dover plazas on Route 1, 258,094 and 226,732 respectively.

That is a slight increase over last year when the toll plazas served 860,505 vehicles during the same four-day weekend.

Officials estimate that $2.4 million were collected in tolls, about 60 percent of which was paid with E-ZPass.
