First time DUI offenders could be required to pass a breathalyzer test any time they want to drive their car under a new proposal by state lawmakers.
Already required for multiple convictions, offenders would have to install an ignition interlock device, or I-I-D for a set amount of time, depending on how intoxicated they were.
The bill also includes a provision that would let first time offenders get an I-I-D license immediately, instead of waiting at least 30 days.
Rep. Helene Keeley (D-Wilmington South) says that will make Delaware roads safer and allow those people to continue living their lives.
“Right now, they’re not allowed to drive at all and statistically, we have people who have a suspended license. 50 percent of them are still driving, which at that point in time causes even more of a public safety issue on our roads,” said Keeley.
The legislation has the support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Legislators overwhelmingly approved the bill in committee with it heading to the full House next.
