The miserable winter weather did not keep the Delaware 87ers from playing their inaugural home game Sunday night.
Only a few hundred fans showed up to see the Sevens play for the first time at UD’s Bob Carpenter Center after nearly a foot of snow fell in Newark – but they were treated to a victory. The NBA D-League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers’ knocked off the Canton Charge 121-112.
The Sevens’ three-point shooting was the difference. Delaware hit 18 of 26 three points attempts, out-scoring Canton from beyond the arc 54-9.
Six Delaware players reached double figures. Thanasis Antetokounmpo topped all scorers with the way with 23 points. Damian Saunders added 22 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
The 87ers improve to 2-4 with the victory. They also hand Canton its first loss of the new season. The Charge was 5-0 entering Sunday night’s contest.
The Sevens are home again later this week, playing back to back home games with Idaho Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Bob.
