Delaware Symphony Orchestra looks to the future

One of Delaware’s oldest arts organizations says it's ready to write a new chapter in its history.

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra is moving forward this summer, despite being replaced by R-and-B singer Macy Gray as headliner at Wilmington’s Fourth of July celebration.

The DSO put months of uncertainty behind it in recent weeks, securing state funds and reaching an agreement on a new 3-year contract with the local musicians union. It quickly followed by announcing its 2013-2014 season schedule.

But challenges remain. The new schedule features shows at a variety of Wilmington area venues. General Manager Diana Milburn says the DSO would like to expand the number of places it plays beyond that.

“I would love to perform more in downstate Delaware, but I need to find a venue that has a stage that is big enough for at least 65 people and maestro and then the auditorium that has the seats for 700 people. That’s a very difficult combination to find, in Delaware especially.”

The DSO begins its new season at Wilmington’s Grand Opera House on Friday, September 27. Tickets for the entire season can be purchased at the Grand Opera House Box Office.

This piece is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
