The October edition of Art Loop Wilmington will include a special event at the Christina Cultural Arts Center, featuring a local artist is using his travels to inspire his work.
Stephen Kingsberry visited Palestine in 2017.
Kingsberry says he was so moved by the oppression of the Palestinian people, that he wanted a way to express those emotions. He chose copper sculptures -- and the result is his new exhibit called “Burden of Palestine.”
“We met with about 20 electorers about what is going on there in Israel and Palestine; very informative, very enlightening and I was just blown away but what I learned through this experience,” Kingsberry said.
He says the exhibit seeks to inform people about the struggles of the Palestinians living under occupation - and those issues will discussed as part of the reception.
“I will talk about the artwork, some 15 pieces of copper sculpture. And Mike Abel, from Delawareans for Palestinian Human Rights will give a talk about more detailed information about what’s happening in Palestine,” said Kingsberry.
The 15 pieces he created for the exhibit will be featured during next week’s Art Loop Wilmington - with the Christina Cultural Arts Center hosting an artists reception for Kingsberry on Friday, October 5 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Kingsberry says the exhibit will also feature works highlighting the discriminatory laws against children, the challenges of the “Wall” separating the Israeli and Palestinian areas and the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River.
In his professional career, Kingsberry worked in accounting and finance in the transportation industry. In 1999, he moved to Delaware to work for the Delaware Transit Corporation, leaving in 2012 as its Executive Director. He moved back to New York to work for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey as the Director/General Manager of the PATH rail system.
Kingsberry is also a former board member of Christina Cultural Arts Center.
