Conservative author David Horowitz sought to place ads in college newspapers across the country denouncing calls for reparations to African-Americans for slavery. Most papers declined to run the ads. Many of those that did sparked protests on their campuses. Av Harris reports from Providence -- Brown University was one of the schools whose paper ran the ad.

A healthy body cannot exist apart from a healthy spirit, old-timers used to say. From that old adage a new model of health is emerging in Europe that seeks to re-imagine our basic understanding of public health. The idea is called Health Promotion. Instead of government proclamations about what is healthy and what is not, it seeks to engage citizens in a democratic discussion about their own diet, habits, and behaviors regarding their health. Health promoters have looked especially to the schools to help kids figure out for themselves what it is to be healthy. In the first of two reports, Frank Browning visits a health-promoting school in Denmark.

Joshua Levs reports that authorities in DeKalb County, Ga., are conducting their largest investigation ever into the murder of Derwin Brown. Brown was the sheriff-elect when he was gunned down in his driveway in December, three days before he would have taken office. Brown had promised to overhaul operations at the county jail, which he called a cesspool of corruption. Thirty-six detectives are on the case, but so far no murder suspects have been named. Three men have been charged with lying to investigators.

Debbie Elliott reports that former smoker Grady Carter of Jacksonville has become the first person to actually collect money from the tobacco industry after beating a tobacco company in court over a smoking-related illness. Carter was awarded $750,000 by a jury in 1995. He received more than $1 million from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. on Thursday as payment and interest.

Paul Brown reports on the legacy of the Highlander Folk School. It was founded in 1932 to help unionize workers during the Great Depression, mostly in Appalachia. But as times and issues changed the school devoted itself to the growing civil rights movement in the 1950's. Many historians say the Highlander Folk School was instrumental in organizing the fight for civil rights in America.

Alan Cheuse, who teaches writing at George Mason University in Virginia, reviews a new collection of short stories by Rick Moody, titled Demonology. (3:15) Demonology is published by Little Brown and Company.

Melinda talks with Krister Fardig, a sophomore at Brown University. Mr. Fardig is one of a group of players of a game, Sanctum, who bought it after the company went out of business.

Linda Wertheimer interviews the authors of two new thrillers: Michael Connelly, about A Darkness More Than Night, and Evan Hunter, about his collaboration with Ed McBain to write Candyland: A Novel in Two Parts. Connelly's book takes main characters from other novels -- an LAPD detective and a retired FBI investigator -- and pits them against one another. Hunter, an acclaimed author who wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, wrote the first half of Candyland, then looked to his alter-ego for the second half, when it becomes more of a murder mystery. White people are buying brownstones and moving in, and trendy, white-owned chains like Starbucks are opening up. Long-time residents are divided about whether or not it means the beginning of the end of Harlem's cultural identity as the "Black Mecca".

Linda talks with John Brown, Kentucky Secretary of State, about the meeting of the National Association of Secretaries of State. Brown is on the Elections Standards Task Force, which has released recommendations for election reform, in the wake of the November election problems in Florida.
