Overnight snowfall causes school closings, delayed openings in northern and central Delaware

The first part of a 1-2 punch of winter weather is making a mess of the morning commute in the northern and central parts of the First State.

Much of Northern New Castle has seen just over an inch and a half as of 5:30 a.m. Central Delaware has seen a half inch of snow.

And that’s prompting schools to close or delay opening.

In New Castle County, Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, New Castle County Vo-Tech and Red Clay School Districts are now closed Monday. They had initially been 2 hours late opening.

In Central Delaware, Caesar Rodney, Capital, Polytech and Smyrna School Districts are now closed.

The University of Delaware will open at 10 a.m.  All classes before 10 a.m. are cancelled. Delaware Tech’s Stanton campus is opening at 11 a.m and its Dover campus is opening at 10 a.m. Delaware State University is closed.

The State of Delaware says its offices in New Castle County will open at 10 a.m.  New Castle County government offices, libraries and activity centers will also open at 10:00 a.m.  Wilmington City Government offices will open two hours late. City of Newark offices are now closed.

 

The New Castle County Courthouse will open two hours late.

The National Weather Service says the snow will continue in the Wilmington are into early afternoon, then shift to a wintry mix, before returningto snow for the evening commute.   There will be a mix of snow, sleet, freeezing rain and rain overight, with another 1-2 inches of snw possible

Central Delaware is expected to see a wintry mix thrughout the day and into Monday night, changing to all rain overnight.  Little or now accumulation is expected there overnight.

Mainly rain, mixed with freezing rain is forecast for most of Sussex County.
