First State unemployment up again in March

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s unemployment rate continues its steady climb upwards.

In March, the state’s jobless rate ticked up for a fifth straight month —this time from 6.3 percent to 6.5 percent.

There were 31,600 unemployed Delawareans last month. The same time last year that number was more than 8,000 fewer and the state’s unemployment rate was 4.8 percent

Last month the national unemployment rate dropped from 6.2 percent to 6 percent. It was 4.4 percent last March.

Delaware did add a couple thousand jobs last month for a total of 445,200 in nonfarm employment. That’s still more than 20,000 fewer jobs than the state counted in March 2020

The leisure and hospitality sector has seen the most year over year job loss in Delaware.

And Wilmington and Dover continue to be the cities most affected by joblessness. Each has a more than 10 percent unemployment rate.
