The latest hotel on the Wilmington Riverfront is part-way through construction.
The Homewood Suites at the Christina Riverfront in Wilmington will be a 120-room “extended stay” hotel.
It is being built by the Buccini/Pollin Group.
At a “topping out” ceremony Monday, co-founder Rob Buccini thanked the operations staff at the company’s other Riverfront hotel— a Westin built four years ago.
“When they came here it was a market that hadn’t had a new hotel in 30 years, and so we had a lot to prove rate-wise that the hotel was financially feasible,” said Buccini. “And due to your great success and hard work, you’re now going to have two more hotels to compete against.”
A Hyatt Place is currently being built by ONIX Group next to Homewood Suites. Buccini/Pollin officials have called the area “Hotel Row.”
The company also has plans for a Marriott at the Riverfront— but officials say they are waiting to see how the Homewood Suites does before they develop a timeline for a third Riverfront hotel.
The Homewood is expected to be completed this summer. Buccini/Pollin officials have said it will produce 30 full-time jobs when operational.
Gov. John Carney framed the hotel as part of the revitalization of the Riverfront.
“We’ve got over a thousand people living down here and more coming, we’ve got several thousand working down here and more coming,” said Carney. “And now we’re going to top off the second hotel down here to go with the Chase center.”
Buccini/Pollin officials have pointed to the Riverfront on the west side of the Christina as their next focus of development.
The company is building the 76ers Fieldhouse there on South Walnut St.
