AAA Mid-Atlantic sees renewed interest in travel

Delaware Public Media

AAA Mid-Atlantic says people are ready to travel again after being cooped up at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AAA cites a recent study by Destination Analysis that found over 69 percent of travelers are ready to travel again - a record high since the pandemic began.

Almost 78% of those surveyed are also actively dreaming about and planning travel, which is the highest number this year.

These numbers suggest optimism in the vaccine roll out across the country as well as updated CDC travel guidelines which indicate fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves.

AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Ken Grant says that increased travel optimism is reflected in what they’re seeing in Delaware.

"Our Delaware Car Care Center is packed with people going to get their cars tuned up and ready for a road trip. Our travel advisors are hearing from people they're booking trips," said Grant. "Normally you would book 6-8 months out, many people are coming in saying what you have in the next few weeks. They're ready to travel, people are ready to get out and experience that one more time."

Grant says that it’s been easy to see the positives from travelers making plans.

“Each week that goes by, AAA travel advisors are seeing more hope and excitement from their customers about traveling this summer or fall and in 2022,” he said.

Grant notes if you do travel to remember to check your destination’s COVID protocols because the rules can vary by county and municipality.

He adds the most popular destinations are all south like Florida, the Caribbean, and Mexico as people look for fun in the sun.
