Sussex County officials are close to beginning work on an $11.4 million, 20,000-square-foot emergency medical services administration and training complex.

An addition to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Complex in Georgetown is moving closer to reality.

The County is 60% through the design phase for an emergency medical services administration and training/certification facility.

The addition will be connected to the existing Sussex County Emergency Operations Center in the Delaware Coastal Business Park in Georgetown.

Mark Sheridan is the deputy director of operations for Sussex County’s Emergency Medical Services. He explains why this addition is needed.

“I think that the biggest reason is that the County wants to try to put the EMS and the EOC - sort of like all the public safety entities - all in the same complex," said Sheridan. "We’ve been in the West Complex….what we call the West Complex here at the County - for several years and sort of outgrown this as our department has grown with personnel.”

County Engineer Hans Medlarz adds that the West Complex is also aging and the County decided to not pump any money into it - opting for something new.

“This is a 20,000-square-foot addition and it is a $12 million project and we are using County funds (to pay for it),” said Medlarz.

Bids for the addition are expected to go out in the spring of 2021 and construction is expected to start in July 2021.
