Biden to be honored for bipartisan achievements

Former Vice President Joe Biden is being honored Wednesday night for putting the needs of the American people above the needs of his political party.

The Bipartisan Policy Center is awarding the longtime Delaware lawmaker its 2017 Congressional Patriot Award.

BPC spokesman Jordan LaPier said the award is given to leaders, like Biden, who rise above partisan politics to pass meaningful legislation.

“He has a decades-long track record of bipartisan statesmanship. You can look to his leadership on the Violence Against Women Act in the 1990’s up to the cancer research legislation he pushed through last year,” LaPier said.

This is the second year the BPC has awarded the Congressional Patriot Award.

Last year’s award was given jointly to civil rights leader turned Democratic Congressman John Lewis and longtime Republican Representative Sam Johnson.

The BPC will also be honoring Sen. Chris Coons with an award for his willingness to work across party lines.

The BPC is a Washington DC-based think tank that promotes bipartisanship.

The award ceremony is being held Wednesday night at the Newseum in Washington D.C.
