Ag Lab back on the road this summer

Schools are out for the summer and the Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation is rolling out its Ag Lab after it was sidelined by pandemic.

The Ag Lab is a traveling classroom that educates young people about farming and agriculture.

“We are a 24-foot mobile trailer, which is kind of like a mobile classroom," said Kali Voshell - the coordinator of the Farm Bureau Foundation. "And there’s different stations in there for students. We usually go around to schools during the school year. And then we also just started - again - doing summer camps after COVID.”

Voshell says there's a variety of educational goals the lab hopes to achieve.

“We teach kids about healthy eating, where their food comes from, Delaware agriculture. We just try to let kids know that their food doesn’t come from Walmart...that there’s actually steps before that,” said Voshell.

They also share information about what agriculture and farming careers are available in the First State.

The Ag Lab was launched in 2014 and is handicap accessible.  It hopes to reach over 3,000 children this summer at Boys and Girls Club summer camps, exhibits and special events.

Voshell notes she’s also looking into travelling to Delaware State Parks this summer to extend their reach.

Voshell says she has found that when the Ag Lab visits New Castle County where there is less of a farming community, she has to work harder to educate both children and adults about the different aspects of agriculture, farming and effects it has on Delaware communities.
