State officials says the path is clear for Delaware to move ahead with full-scale sports betting.
The Delaware Attorney General’s Office and state Finance Department found no legal reason preventing the state from expanding its sports betting offerings following this week’s Supreme Court decision lifting a federal ban sports wagering.
Delaware has offered parlay betting on pro football since 2009, thanks to a narrow exemption to that federal ban. But the state law passed at the time to legalize sports gambling covers all wagering on professional and college sports, excluding Delaware teams.
Secretary of Finance Rick Geisenberger says training for workers at the state’s three racetrack casinos is scheduled to start next week.
“I mean obviously what we want to make sure is that people are able to answer the questions that they get and are able to provide good service to customers that walk in the door,” said Geisenberger.
Geisenberger says the state hopes to start offering expanded sports betting by the end of June.
Delaware lawmakers want to get their system up before New Jersey. The Asbury Park Press reports Monmouth Park Racetrack in New Jersey is delaying offering sports betting at the request of lawmakers there. It had planned to start this month.
