Delaware State Police warn against idling unoccupied cars

Delaware Public Media

Delawareans leaving idling cars unattended could be in for a rude awakening.

The Delaware State Police say motorists who warm up their cars on chilly mornings and then head back inside could face fines.

Master Corporal Gary Fournier says a first offense could see a ticket of $25 to $75.

We’re looking out for the public to let them know that there are people and there have been a couple instances within in the last few months where cars have been broken into while they were left outside idling," Fournier said.  "This is in order to avoid people getting their vehicles stolen."

Fournier adds the law applies to vehicles with remote starters, as well.

Officials say motorists leaving their cars running unattended in parking lots can also face fines.
