Delaware highways saw plenty of traffic over holiday weekend

The Fourth of July weekend was a busy one on First State roadways.

DelDOT reports 1,009,081vehicles passed through the state’s three major toll plazas between Friday and Monday.

Those plazas are the Newark plaza on I-95 and the Route 1 tolls at Biddle’s Corner and Dover.

A four-day holiday weekend meant a major increase on volume over last year when 648,583 cars were counted over a three-day holiday weekend.

Newark Plaza was the busiest of the toll plazas – with 430,274 vehicles logged there over the holiday weekend.

DelDOT estimates that $2.8 million was collected in tolls during the four-day July 4th weekend.  Last year, DelDOT reported $2.1 million was collected during a three-day holiday weekend.

DelDOT also notes that over 60 percent of the trips counted used E-ZPass.
