The changing face of Delaware’s Supreme Court

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="63341"]

Last week, Gov. Jack Markell nominated private corporate attorney Karen Valihura to fill the Delaware Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Jack Jacobs later this month. Just as that opening was filled, another was created. This week, Justice Carolyn Berger announced she’s stepping down in September. Combined with Leo Strine replacing Myron Steele in the Chief Justice’s chair, that makes three new faces on the First State’s Supreme Court in less than a year.

Contributor Jeff Mordock of Delaware Law Weekly and the Delaware Business Court Insider offers his insights on what’s become a Supreme Court carousel -- and a possible revival of Chancery Court’s confidential arbitration program. (More)

Curtain about to rise on expanded Firefly Festival

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="63343"]

Music fans from around the country descend on Dover next week for this year’s Firefly Music Festival.

What began in 2012 with three days of music and 30 thousand fans is expected to attract around 70 thousand concertgoers over 4 days in 2014.

And while most welcome the expansion – it has come with growing pains – including a traffic nightmare on the event’s opening day last year.

Delaware Public Media’s Karl Malgeiro caught up with Firefly’s event director Greg Bostrom of Red Frog Events to talk about the growth, the traffic, the bands and the fans of Firefly. (More)

First State baseball fans get a special treat next week. The Wilmington Blue Rocks host this year’s Carolina/California League all-star game Tuesday night, welcoming top Single-A prospects from both leagues to Frawley Stadium to show off the skills they hope eventually land them in the big leagues.

But the Rocks are offering more than just the All-Star game. The team has activities planned both Monday and Tuesday, hoping to create an all-star festival. Among the highlights, former Royal and Red Sox star Johnny Damon’s return to Wilmington to have his number retired.

The Green checked in with Blue Rocks general manger Chris Kemple for more on what fans can expect. (More)

In this week’s Enlighten Me --- we highlight an organization offering breast cancer patients and their families a respite from their battle against the disease.

Last week, for a third straight year, Little Pink Houses of Hope brought families to Bethany Beach for a free vacation. The goal – give families some precious stress-free time together while making new friends and sharing experiences with others in similar situations.

This year, the organization – founded 2011 - hosted 10 families in Bethany -- one of 14 such retreats scheduled nationwide this summer.

Delaware Public Media contributor Larry Nagengast and producer Larry Nagengast joined those families for a few hours to learn more. (More)
