Wilmington Renaissance Corp. unveils downtown creative district plan

The Wilmington Renaissance Corporation unveiled its plans to turn a portion of downtown Wilmington into a creative district this week.

The $50 million proposal aims to use public-private partnerships to turn a 25-block district of Quaker Hill - between Market, Washington, 4th, and 9th streets - into a thriving arts-based community.

Wilmington Renaissance Corporation’s Managing Director Carrie Gray visited The Green this week to delve into the plan and how make it a reality. (More)


Rep. John Carney pushes ACA fix through Republican controlled House

Congressman John Carney beat the odds last week. The Democrat managed to get a bill he sponsored through the Republican controlled House. It’s the Expatriate Health Coverage Clarification Act – designed to correct an unintended consequence of the Affordable Care Act that could cost the First State hundreds of jobs.

Carney stopped by our studios this week to tell us about the bill and his struggle to get it through the gridlock on Capitol Hill.


Being part of the solution to bee population losses

You’ve probably heard about the declining honeybee population in North America, blamed in large part on Colony Collapse Disorder. But the Delaware Nature Society says anyone can help mitigate CCD’s impact here in the First State simply by what they choose to grow in their own backyard.

Delaware Public Media’s Karl Malgeiro visited the Society’s Coverdale Farm Preserve to learn about its work to educate people about honeybees and how to help boost their numbers with native plants. (More)


Wilmington Grand Prix brings bikes and more downtown

Next week, the bikes are back in Wilmington. The 8th annual Wilmington Grand Prix brings some world’s top competitive cyclists to the First State to race. But the three day event which gets underway Friday May 16th is much more than a sporting event. It’s evolved into a street festival that brings thousands of visitors and thousands of dollars to downtown Wilmington.

This week –The Green sat down with event manger Jerry Du Philly to talk about the Grand Prix’s growth and the state and city of Wilmington’s connection to cycling. (More)


Enlighten Me: Scrapple takes a turn in the culinary spotlight

First State foodies celebrate their version of the Super Bowl next week with the arrival of the Mid Atlantic Wine and Food Festival.

Over ninety chefs and 20 winemakers from Delaware and beyond will host events throughout the state beginning Wednesday.

And amid the soft shell crab and craft beer pairing-the black tie winemakers gala and a Q&A with the producer of NPR's Splendid Table- is an event we found intriguing.
