A little rain didn’t scare away many holiday travelers headed to the Delaware beaches this weekend.
Carol Everhart, director of the Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, says local hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts were bulging – just as strong of a showing as last year.
“We had quite the line of vehicles coming into the resort area. Accommodations were at 99 percent or better on Saturday night and the same seems to be true for Sunday,” Everhart said.
Lines of cars also drove into Sussex County a little early on Thursday – something she says has been a strong trend for the past few years.
“A lot of that may be due to the fact that with the growing area right outside of the resorts – meaning a second home or a home that’s being built that maybe they’re going to retire in – they come down every weekend and that is regardless of what the weather conditions would be unless it’s something severe.”
Retail was a mixed bag this year, with fierce competition as always between beachfront shops and outlet malls on Route 1.
If you’re planning on visiting the beach area any time this summer – prepare for some crowds.
Everhart says her chamber of commerce has given out tourist and relocation packets far and above last year’s levels, which she says will translate to more feet in the sand.
