Fair turns back time to the 18th century

Delaware State Parks

First State Heritage Park in Dover is hosting a throwback fair this weekend that takes people back to the 1700s.

The 18th Century Market Fair promises to turn the clock back hundreds of years on The Green in Dover.

First State Heritage Park Superintendent Sarah Zimmerman said the event will feature traditional trades like glass making, woodworking, blacksmithing and spinning.

"We’re going to recreate the 18th Century Market Fairs that they used to have on The Green. Basically they’re going to do it just like they did in the 18th Century, no electronics, no modern equipment or anything like that.”

Zimmerman said the fair has seen a steady increase in attendance over the past few years.

She expects to see around 2,000 people attend this year, up from around 800 last year.

The fair will feature a period magic show at the Schwartz Center for the Arts.

The Lewes Historical Society will demonstrate how chocolate was made in the 18th Century and 1700’s-style music and dancers will be on display.

The 18th Century Market Fair starts Saturday at 10 a.m. on The Green in Dover.
