Leadership change for Delaware State Univ. Board of Trustees

The chairman of Delaware State University’s Board of Trustees is stepping down.

Dr. Claibourne D. Smith announced his departure from the top spot at a recent board meeting. Dr. Smith served as chair since 1992 - except for a brief stint between September 2008 and January 2010 when stepped down as board chair to serve as the University’s acting president.

Immediately after Dr. Smith’s announcement, the trustee members unanimously elected David Turner as the new board chair.

Turner is an alumnus of DSU and has served as the board’s vice chair since 2010. He joined the board in 2008 and served as head of the body’s Development and Investments Committee.

In honor of Dr. Smith’s more than 25 years of service on the board and 22 as chairman, the university’s board voted to rename Delaware State’s administration building after him.

While no longer chair, Dr. Smith said he will continue as an active board member until his term expires in 2016.
