First State college football teams come up empty

It was not a good weekend for local college football teams.

Wesley College lost for their first time this season Saturday.

The Wolverines, ranked fourth in Division III, dropped their regular season finale on the road, topped by Division I FCS Charlotte 38-33.

Wesley quarterback Joe Callahan threw for 356 yards and two TDs and rushed for two more scores, but Charlotte's Kalif Phillips racked up 173 yards on the ground and three touchdowns to help the 49ers avenge last year's loss to the Wolverines.

Wesley is 9-1 and will learn who it will play in the opening round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Sunday night at 6 when the post-season bracket is revealed.

The University of Delaware was no match for top-ranked New Hampshire. The Blue Hens fell at UNH 43-14.

The Hens' two scores came on runs by Wes Hills, who rushed for 115 yards on the day. UD falls to 6-5 with the loss.

And Delaware State got blown out in its home finale, trounced by Florida A&M 41-7. DSU fell behind 31-0 in the first half and could not recover.

The Hornets are now 2-9.
