Motorists will pay more to drive Route 1 starting this weekend

Weekend driving on Route 1 will cost you more starting Friday.

State officials announced a one dollar toll increase at the highway’s main plazas back in June when it became clear the General Assembly would not consider Governor Jack Markell’s (D-Delaware) ten cent gas tax proposal.

Weekend tolls at the Biddle’s Corner and Dover plazas will rise from $2 to $3 effective this weekenndand will be in effect from 7 pm on Friday nights to 11 pm on Sunday nights.

The toll increase is anticipated to net the state $10 million. That money will be combined with $20 million in borrowing this fiscal year to fund statewide paving and transportation projects.

Weekday tolls and the ramp tolls in Smyrna and Dover will not change.
