Smyrna names new police chief

Smyrna's Police Chief can remove the interim tag from his business card.

Lieutenant Norman Wood has been sworn as the new head of the town's police force.

Wood replaces former Smyrna Police Chief Wil Bordley, who retired in December to teach criminal justice at Delaware Technical Community College.

Wood was selected from six finalists for the job. Over 60 applicants initially applied to head up Smyrna’s police department.

Wood has served as the interim chief since January.

The 22-year police veteran began his law enforcement career as a dispatcher with the Smyrna Police department in 1992. He then became a patrol officer and eventually rose to become the department's second in charge and head of the agency's Special Investigations Unit.

Wood also currently serves as Kent County Sheriff.

The Wyoming resident says he will serve out his term for that post but will not run for re-election in November.
